About Us FBC Purpose Statement

First Baptist Church is a warm and loving fellowship of believers in Christ. We believe you will find out that there is a place for you in the family here.

Our Purpose

FBC Portage defines its purpose as: Reaching-Up to God through prayer and worship, Reaching-In to the church family through education and fellowship, and Reaching-Out into the local community and world through personal evangelism and missions.

Our Vision

In recent years, FBC Portage has been excited about reaching out. It has been meaningful to do prayer walks, door-to-door caring/contacting and also show deeds of kindness through a ministry booth at our local Kalamazoo fair.

We encourage those of you who would join our family at First Baptist to give, to grow, and to go. We encourage people to be committed to financial giving, to be committed to learn Bible truth, and to be committed to using one's spiritual gift(s) to edify the local church and to spread the Kingdom of God abroad.

Our Affiliation

First Baptist Church of Portage is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Our known strength as Southern Baptists is partnering in giving and going. FBC Portage gives financially to the Southern Baptist Cooperative Program, which supports missionaries to take the Christian message to North America and around the world. And FBC Portage also partners together with sister churches (South Central Baptist Association) to take the gospel into our communities.

Our History

In 1959, the First Baptist Church began with a small group of people meeting in an area missionary's home. In 1964, committed people built a beautiful worship center, fellowship hall, and educational space. In 1995, the FBC added to its campus a state of the art children's educational wing.
